Some Useful Kitchen Appliances & Their Importance

Kitchen Appliances have been designed to simplify our cooking tasks. As we have developed innumerable cooking recipes to satisfy our taste buds, we have designed and developed kitchen appliances to aid us in our cooking almost on daily basis.

On the other hand, Kitchen Appliances such as coffee grinders, automatic mills, barbeque ranges, nutmeg graters, double boilers, pellet stoves, homemade meat smokers, bread maker, waffle maker are required on an infrequent basis as and when you wish to prepare a special dish.Beginning a day with juice, toast and scrambled eggs which means you do need to invest in juicer, toaster and pan along with a cooking range or microwave.Well, these are few of the most basic appliances required in any kitchen. Apart from these, you could even go for specially designed kitchen appliances which are designed and cater to specialty cooking especially regional cooking. Each cuisine be it Asian, Continental, French, Italian, Thai, Chinese etc has its own set of cookware and even cutlery. Specialty cuisine when cooked and eaten in suitable cookware makes you savor the food even more, considering it has been cooked and served in its authentic style and manner.Followed by a afternoon break which means you need to invest in a tea or coffee maker and oven to bake some freshest of chocolate chip cookies for yourself. In case you prefer making your own breads, croissants, you do need a bread maker while for baking cookies, brownies and vegetable pies, the oven or the microwave has to be kept handy at all times. With special occasions such as parties, anniversaries, birthdays and get-togethers which mean cooking for large quantities, you could be requiring large sized cooking pans, salad bowls, serving ware and even dinner sets which make it easy and convenient for you to cook and serve the food for the guests. As you begin to prepare lunch, you could be requiring a gas cooker, blender, mixer and host of cooking pans and ladles which aid you making your lunch in say half an hour or an hour to the maximum. This again depends upon what you are cooking and for how many people you are cooking. At the same time, you do need refrigerators and freezers to store fruits, vegetables, meat and other dairy products. A dishwasher simplifies washing and cleaning of greasy cookware and dinner ware to a great extent.

Top 5 Things Your Mother Never Told You about Giving Gifts

If your mom's like mine, she probably gave you lots of advice on what to do about mostly everything, including giving gifts. But sometimes what your mother didn't tell you about giving gifts is what matters most.

2. And did your mom ever tell you that if you give an inexpensive (i.e., cheap) gift, the receiver will think you're a tightwad or have bad taste? They will. It's not that gifts have to be expensive, but they do need to have some class or meaning to the person you're giving the gifts to. You can get by with any gift as along as it has a symbolic or fun meaning to them. But never give cheap because you're, well, cheap!5. The last thing that your mom probably never told you about giving gifts is that when in doubt, give money. She probably told you giving money as a gift showed poor taste and planning. Well, poohey, Mom. No one dislikes getting money as a gift! No one! Money may just be the most thoughtful gift of all. After all, it's the one thing everybody needs, can use and probably won't ask for-unless they're your kids, that is.3. The opposite of this is true too, and mom probably never told you this either. Gifts don't always have to be expensive. What gifts do need to be is meaningful or useful. No matter what the cost, a gift that a person can't use or doesn't need will be stuck in a closet and forgotten. The same is true for the meaning of a gift. Maybe you want to give a friend a bottle of bubbles because it reminds you of the summer when you were both six and loved them so much you two spent days blowing bubbles. By all means do! Your friend is certain to love the gift and be reminded of those days too.4. Which brings us to the next thing Mom probably never told you about giving gifts. Gifts don't have to be oooh, so serious. Some of the best gifts in the world are silly, but they bring a smile to a person's face. These are usually some of the best gifts in the world to give-and get. In this stressful, turbulent world we live in, we all could use a gift that makes us smile and reminds us not to take everything so seriously.

5. The last thing that your mom probably never told you about giving gifts is that when in doubt, give money. She probably told you giving money as a gift showed poor taste and planning. Well, poohey, Mom. No one dislikes getting money as a gift! No one! Money may just be the most thoughtful gift of all. After all, it's the one thing everybody needs, can use and probably won't ask for-unless they're your kids, that is.

How To Successfully Display Christmas Lights

Nothing says Christmas is here more than a tangled set of tree lights. Lights are as important at this time of year as mince pies and stockings. There seems to be no end to how far people will go with their Christmas decorations and lights either with entire houses being lit up becoming relatively common. There are a few important things to take into consideration when purchasing and using Christmas twinkling lights however that if overlooked can cause frustration and in some cases even danger. This article acts as a guide to getting it right with Christmas decorations and how to make the most of them.

HOME ELECTRONICS.*** In warm weather, pull the curtains closed to minimize the heat from the sun.*** Use fans or high efficiency room air conditioners if you have a big house.*** Try putting like fabrics together so they all finish drying at the same time, and do not over dry your cloths.

Indoor Christmas lights and outdoor Christmas lights are a great way to decorate the home at this time of year. By following the advice above, your home will look fantastic and undoubtedly get the neighbours talking! One final word of warning - If you are using a large number of Christmas lights to highlight your home, it may be wise to seek out the services of a professional electrician who will ensure everything is safe and functioning well.

Tips to Save on Electricity

Essentially, there are only two approaches to reducing that monthly utility company payment - reduce energy consumption or produce your own energy. We'll keep getting shocked by large monthly energy bills if we keep purchasing electricity from the power company and throwing it away through sloppy energy habits.

Knowing where you want to use your lights is the crucial first step towards decorating your home with lights. Are the lights going outside or inside? Are they being used in a tree or to illuminate something in particular? Once you have a plan you can begin to measure up. Nothing causes more frustration than a set of lights that doesn't quite reach far enough or is to long and has been clumped together at one end. Use a tape measure or other measuring device to find out more or less the exact length and size of area that is going to be decorated with lights as this will help you choose enough lights or a string of lights that is the right length. It is also crucial that the electrical sockets being designated for the lights are included in the plan as their location and distance from the area being illuminated need to be factored in.The size of the bulbs and the lights themselves should also be considered early on. A very small tree lit up with very large light bulbs is not generally a great look and vice versa. If you are lighting up your house or an outside tree perhaps, you may want to choose lights that are fairly large as too small bulbs just won't provide much of an impact or dramatic Christmas effect. Sometimes a mixture of sizes can work very well for example the top of a Christmas tree can look good adorned with small, dainty bulbs whilst the bottom of the tree can look great with slightly larger bulbs with a more intense colour. When choosing lights, pay close attention to the wattage as nothing is worse than a constantly tripping power supply in the home. You don't want the lights to go off every time a toaster is put on or a hairdryer is used. Make sure there is enough electricity to go around with the addition of Christmas lights around the house. Christmas lights generally come in a series circuit or a parallel circuit. If you are using a large number of lights then a parallel circuit may be better to use as when one bulb goes out the remaining lights stay illuminated. With a series circuit when one light goes out, they all go out until the offending bulb is found and replaced. For example, for a child or teenager, you could take them out for the day to a theme park, bowling, cinema or one of the many games warehouses now available for parties and celebratory gatherings. You could throw a surprise party or go to the zoo for the day - or at least head out for some fish and chips and a big gooey cake! For older birthday celebrants, why not head out for a fun and wholly unsophisticated evening day at an amusements arcade, at the seaside or maybe a safari park. Think about the things you used to enjoy when you were young and take a step back in time to enjoy it all once again! Lose your stress for a day and enjoy a relaxing day of fun and laughter with ice-creams and chips depending on the weather, and then head to the pub later on for a few pints and to enjoy yourselves together. Or you could go upmarket and treat your lucky person to a smart day in the country and a posh lunch, focusing on fun and banishing all talk of work!LIGHTING.*** Always be certain to put a correctly sized pot on the stove top. Using a little pot on a big burner will simply be wasting the heat your stove is producing. Also, heat your content more quickly by placing a lid on your pot.Train your brain and test your intelligence with this fun game-with over 120 different puzzle teasers and questions designed to twist and test your brain in different ways! The logic and lateral thinking puzzles can be played alone or with a group of family members or friends - great for having some fun together and enjoying some good natured ribbing!*** Sleep mode on your personal computer saves energy, but your screen saver does not. Adjust your settings to begin saving electricity immediately.*** If possible, be sure to place your refrigerator away from the oven and dishwasher because the heat from these two appliances would only make your refrigerator work that much harder to stay cool.*** When adjusting the temperature in your house, refrain from setting your thermostat extra high or extremely low. An extreme setting won't change your house temperature any faster, and if you forget to reset the thermostat, you could end up wasting energy.IN THE KITCHEN.APPLIANCES.You can see your energy bills drop once you implement these easy ideas. These ideas don't take much time and for the most part don't cost anything, and you can begin to save on electricity right away.*** Before every new load, be sure to clean the lint out of your dryer's lint trap. The Brain Fitness Kit*** In locations that get a lot of use, like the kitchen and the bathroom, replace standard light bulbs with CFL light bulbs. These bulbs use much less energy and last as much as 10 times longer so while they cost a bit more on the front end, they will save on electricity over time.*** Other items that draw energy even when they are not in use are game consoles, such as Wii or Xbox 360.*** Save on electricity by turning off your central air conditioner and cooling on the rooms that you are using. If you're not a morning person, then getting up for work is never particularly pleasant! So why not lighten the mood a little with these excellent mood stamps - also wonderful for a celebration Sunday breakfast! These great stamps put two messages on your tasty toast- either a cheerful 'good morning' or a romantic 'I love you', for the ultimate in those small romantic gestures that warm your loved one's heart! These are fun gifts with a very sweet twist and will delight all who receive them! Just make that toast nice and hot and buttery! All you need to do is press the stamp into the bread and then pop it directly into the toaster, and the message will almost magically appear! Why not combine this lovely toast with a relaxing breakfast in bed with fresh coffee, juice and some lovely flowers to really treat them to a hotel like experience. You could even nip out and get their favourite newspaper to complete the treat!*** Battery charges for the gadgets in your life (such as your cell phone) consume energy even when they are not charging your equipment. Always unplugging the charger from the wall (not just the gadget) will reduce your level of electricity consumption.*** Reduce the thermostat setting on your water heater to 120 degrees and when you are going to be away for awhile, set the temperature "vacation" to really save on energy consumption. If the lights are going to be used outside, it is crucial that outdoor lights are purchased for this. Using lights that are designed for indoors for this purpose can be very dangerous indeed as rain and indoor electrical wires do not mix well. Furthermore, outdoor lights are tougher and will withstand bad weather conditions. Indoor lights would be much more likely to break when banged around in the wind or battered by the rain.*** Most lightly soiled clothing cleans up just fine in cold water, so wash in cold water whenever possible to reduce the demand on your water heater.TIP. . . You can plug several electronic items or appliances into a power strip and turn them off using the switch on the strip. This will cut the power completely without going through the trouble of unplugging everything.*** You can hang your clothes on a line and avoid the cost of running your dryer all together.*** Don't pre-wash your dishes by hand. Scrape off the food from your dirty plates and set the dishwasher to pre-rinse.Whilst your loved one enjoys their toast, why not have some laughs with fun gifts like the excellent Brain Fitness kit?HEATING and COOLING.Mood Toast StampsIndoor Christmas lights and outdoor Christmas lights are a great way to decorate the home at this time of year. By following the advice above, your home will look fantastic and undoubtedly get the neighbours talking! One final word of warning - If you are using a large number of Christmas lights to highlight your home, it may be wise to seek out the services of a professional electrician who will ensure everything is safe and functioning well.*** Every degree you lower your heater or raise your air conditioner will save on electricity.*** When it's not in use, close the damper on your fireplace. When your chimney is not in use, be sure to close its damper to ensure that heat does not escape your house.*** If you have a window installed air conditioner, either cover it or remove it from the window in the off season.*** Open the drapes to let heat into the house in the winter - its a great solar powered home energy saver!*** The more you open your refrigerator door the more this appliance needs to work to keep your food cold. Keep the door closed to minimize refrigerator run time.*** You can save energy by allowing the air in your home to circulate as it should, so be sure that your furniture is not blocking any air vents.

You can see your energy bills drop once you implement these easy ideas. These ideas don't take much time and for the most part don't cost anything, and you can begin to save on electricity right away.

 Electronics like TV, stereo, computers
Small appliances like microwaves, toaster ovens, etc.
 Clothing
Art work like paintings or prints
 Dishes, silverware and cookware
 Sporting equipment
 Books
JewelryRFID use by the US Military was identified quickly by major retailers like Wal Mart, Metro Group, Target and Tesco who felt that the ability to see stock in their supply chains would help eliminate delivery error, stock-outs, shrinkage, human error etc and also help in building consumer driven demand chains. Inventory cost money, and uncertainty causes stock build up by all stakeholders in the supply chain. High stock levels, or empty retail shelves simply reflect a lack of knowledge. Awareness of goods flying off the retail shelf by manufacturer is extremely useful when creating production runs. However for now retailers are focusing on the benefits of pallet and case-level tagging. Manufacturers and retailers are working very closely together to remove inefficiencies from their supply chains. This helps consumers by keeping the right stock on the shelf at competitive prices, and in America where item level prescriptions are being rolled out by a major pharmacy group (CVS Pharmacy), it will enable better management and control of drug stocks. Hence if a drug in one pharmacy is within three months of its shelf life it can be dispatched to another pharmacy where demand for that specific drug is greater. Also it will flag up any unusual drug sales or errors.A whole new infrastructure will be necessary to capture, control, provide consistency, and context to massive amounts of new data flowing faster. Global standards and interoptability of systems and data will be necessary. Again EPCGlobal, Gen2 Tags, improved Readers etc., are making great headway here. The devil is in the detailAround 7000 American gas stations are enabling clients to fast fuel their vehicles by the simple wave of their RFID fob. Simply fill up and go! The fuel fobs have been so successful that their use is now been considered in fast food outlets where convenience and service are key to happy and loyal clients.Once you have identified the target market for the documents you will be creating, you will need to start to plan how the documents will be organised. This process is largely dependent on what documentation is being produced, but you can follow a few rough rules of thumb. Firstly, if the documents are to support a particularly detailed product (such as a computer application) get your grubby hands on it as quickly as you can. By examining the product in detail you can formulate a plan of attack and begin to compose an organisational structure. Whilst you are exploring the product in detail, take copious notes, as doing this during the initial exploratory stages can save you time which can be absolutely vital if you are working to deadline. Even at the planning stage you must ensure there is a consistency to layout, and organisational structure for the document. Select numbering conventions, paragraph styles, and generate rough ideas for layout purposes now, and save vital time later.Although it is possible to create technical documents using parchment and blood, it's not advisable. Many specialist software applications exist to help you create powerful documentation, and part of your duties as a technical author, include selecting the right tool for the job. Largely this depends on the nature of the documents being produced, and the nature of their eventual distribution. If the documents can be delivered using the Internet, this is certainly an avenue to consider. To that end make use of packages such as Flash MX and Dreamweaver to achieve this goal. For integrated online help, you may wish to create raw HTML documents, or alternatively select a specialist package such as RoboHelp or similar. In the case of print based documents, you will need to select a software package powerful enough to handle what you will throw at it. Many inexperienced technical authors instantly turn towards Microsoft Word (as it is ubiquitous in may commercial and private environments). Unless your documentation is going to be beneath 150 pages, and you know how to create templates and make macros, avoid MS Word. As any technical author will tell you it has nasty habits all it's own, and can often be an unstable package to work with. If you are creating graphics heavy documentation, you may wish to consider Quark Xpress, or choose potentially the industry leader in the field, Adobe Framemaker. Whatever software you select, you must ensure you become incredibly proficient with it, either by investing in training, or by using it day after day after day!But to speak only about RFID in terms of supply chain is to miss the point. Emerging technologies: sensors, (mots or smart dust), Nanotechnology and community-wide wireless broadband, GPS, are changing the landscape for business applications and life style generally. Some argue that this is the biggest technological transformation of the 21st Century. It will transform our Cities, our work processes and our lives.Metro Groups Future Store Initiative in Germany is providing a glance of retailing tomorrow. Shoppers do not notice anything unusual except that each shopping trolley has a PDA which can help shoppers find products. Item level tagging is still a bit away, but the ability of the smart shelves at Metro to identify when an item is removed from the shelf is very useful for back-office staff, and the ability to identify goods about to go out of date and reduce their price helps maximise profits. Additionally there is a whole new industry of marketing and promotional ideas coming together as shoppers walk past products for sale. Replacing inventory with information is key to improved retail efficiency and enhanced client shopping experience. We are witnessing the rise of Real World Awareness, which will have massive implications for us all. This is not just about identifying a packet of frozen peas in a walk-in freezer, but enabling the freezer to tell the operator its status in real time. Does the freezer need maintenance? Are the doors shut, lights off, stock accounted for. Are there fresh raspberries in that freezer? The ability to flag potential problems, remove errors, cut costs and drive efficiency. The dollar amount of your coverageSensors in doctors surgical gloves can help prevent accidents or assist a surgical procedure. Most operations are carried out in a standard way and the use of sensor networks can reflect the current state of an operation, assist with options, issue reminders, alert other professionals etc. Risk and error can be reduced. Work on this is currently being done at the Danish Centre of Pervasive Healthcare and Intel Research Seattle. This may lead the way to fast track medical training and open up better on-line training to less wealthy nations.A friend of a friend once phoned in a panic to request assistance because her car-key fob was flat and she was locked-out of her car. It was explained that the key could be inserted manually in the keyhole of the driver door! She could not believe this and was amazed to find a hole in the door that she had never seen in four years! The point is our reality is driven by what we do and experience every day; we all have blind spots just like the Ice Merchants of yesteryear who never thought that fringes and freezers would arrive to destroy their business overnight. Anyone hear of innovations where tomorrows fridges will be running on sound waves? Goggle thermoacoustic refrigeration!Let me explain the difference between Actual Cash Value (ACV) and Replacement Costs. ACV is the value of your property at the time a loss takes place. For example, if your television set is five years old, its valued at much less than if it were brand new. The lesser amount is what you are reimbursed. With new sensors based in houses, smart kitchens, hospitals, factories, public parks, highways and parking spaces what will this all mean to Society, to our privacy and to sorting out some of our major social and economic problems? Are we able to pull these emerging technologies together strategically for The London Olympics to show the world that Business UK is fit and ready?Rental insurance may be worth the investment just for the peace of mind it offers you.Again in Healthcare the ability of all hospital staff to be aware of impending operations, surgical and post-operational equipment and identify people and assets quickly is a massive daily task. Time searching for people and assets within hospitals is enormous. Decontamination needs to insure that the correct equipment is at the correct theatre and in fit condition for smooth operational delivery. The reality is that Admissions do not talk with Theatre who do not speak with Decontamination, and cancellation of an operation at around 20K a go is not an infrequent occurrence. No wonder, some Healthcare Organisations has been described as a family of hostile relatives! Against this background stock is hard to identify and some hospitals phone their suppliers to ascertain how much business was initiated the previous month! eCommerce has been around for ages with platforms like UK HealthLogistics ready to deliver value. Surely a modern supermarket approach here to supply chains efficiency is required. Who in EU Healthcare are authorised to mandate this wisdom? Once this simple decision is mandated who is ready to deliver the first connected hospital? It will not happen overnight, but problems like hospital cash flow, supply chain efficiency, MRSA, adverse medical events (with their massive liability payouts) may be greatly reduced by sensors and emerging technologies. From an IT perspective one of the most salient facts of these emerging technologies will be the massive amount of additional digital data to collect and the need for new hardware, software and robust standard networks to collectively make it all work.China is currently building fifty smart cities with sensors embedded everywhere. Sensors to help improve traffic flow, bridge structure, water management, and improved transport networks. At micro and macro level where are the benefits for both industry and citizens. If everything is tagged (people and assets) then a building site can become a safer place to work. Project planners can insure at a glance that materials and tools are in place prior to bringing in the builders. Chemicals can flag attention if positioned with dangerous materials or incorrectly positioned. We can control Air, Water and Waste by tiny sensors, or at least remotely monitor public safety in real time. We can perhaps drive better greener strategies and energy improved housing. Dentalab are making dental molds with radio frequency tags so that dentists can be alerted if an incorrect dental crown is offer to a client. Implicit here are enormous benefits for efficiency and safety. TrentStar, the beer keg asset management company, deploying RFID, made a fivefold decrease in beer kegs maintenance costs. Imagine if every public utility meter was self read? Would that reduce rates? What if parking meters could chat with cars to update parking charges? Singaporeans use their car tags to pay for parking and road use. Big Brother Technology can be convenient if managed without abuse. Laws are required that protect the public. Would we like to carry a tag with us everywhere which for example enabled our mobiles to be an oyster card or credit card and booted up our PC when we entered the ground entrance of our 15th floor office? Would that increase productivity for employers? What if employers paid our transport fees in recognition? You may think you dont own enough personal property to make the cost of insurance worthwhile. Youre probably wrong! If you sit down and add up the cost of everything you own, you may be in for a big surprise. Consider what you have invested in such things as:These sensor innovations are also happening in Formula 1 racing. McLaren Mercedes have around 50 sensors throughout their car engine and chassis to help them improve performance. Cars racing along at 200 mph plus are giving their mechanics back at the racetrack vital data about their engines performance . Mechanics are even aware that drivers are about to change gear! This new sensor technology works well despite a very difficult environment with massive security challenges.Even worse, what would you do if a friend is injured on your property and decides to sue you for medical costs and more? Its a scary thought, isnt it?

Technical writing is not regardless of what you may think, an easy job. It requires expertise, patience and a very odd mixture of skills. Just like any other job, you can learn how to do it, but even that tuition will not necessarily make you any good at it. To be a good technical author, you have to be anal yet creative, focussed yet communicative, and a flexible expert. This, as you can probably imagine, is no simple task. Although you may think creating technical documents is easy, creating accurate, consistent and timely documentation to a high commercial standard is a highly challenging role. Regardless of your budget, in the long run it will provide significant ROI if you hire a specialist. After all, they will be able to do in days, what you tear your hair our attempting to accomplish in weeks if not months.

What Can Emerging Technologies Do For Society?

RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) has been described as the oldest new technology! It has been around for about fifty years, its value in identifying Aircraft in flight during the Second World War was quickly realised by the British Air force. The following forty years the technology was mainly used in security applications, building access, road tolls and key fobs.

Where your rental property is located and the number of previous claims made, not only by you, but by others living in the same area. What is sure however is that RF is here to stay, with major pilots and positive proofs of concept across many industries: food and drink, aerospace, libraries, government, transport, retail, pharmaceutical, healthcare, logistics, auto industry, security etc. The IT and Building Industry have an enormous opportunity here. DeductiblesSometimes it may be beyond a companies or individuals budget to hire a professional writer to address their technical documentation. Although in an ideal world all technical documentation should be produced by a highly trained expert, unfortunately we do not live in an ideal. In the same way that many people will attempt to repair their own home appliances, many people will attempt to write quality technical documents. Just as fiddling with a toaster can result in electrocution, attempting to write technical documents from scratch without prior advice will ultimately result in failure. As a rough rule of thumb you should always seek to employ a specialist, but if for whatever reason you can't and you are the poor unfortunate that has had documentation duties foisted on them, don't despair. This brief guide outlines some of the core skills you will need to bring to your writing, technical conventions to be aware of, software packages you can consider, and definite things to avoid. Hopefully even if you have never written a sentence in your life about anything vaguely technical you will have at the very least, a broader picture of what technical writing entails. We need to discuss the privacy issues much more, the benefits to humanity the trade off between lack of privacy and benefit. No one for sure wants to see George Orwells vision become reality, but ubiquitous sensor and emerging technologies have the ability if deployed correctly to make a positive contribution to our lives. And we need to appreciate that other parts of the world, hungry for success are less concerned with privacy issues and are fast exploiting these technologies.Planning for perfectionSmart Granite worktops will soon be in vogue. The granite will carry a number of transponders and a extra large embedded antenna to insure that all food items placed on the worktop will sync with all the other smart utensils, enabling everything in the kitchen to automatically communicate: washing machine, fridge, cooker, extractor, toaster, microwave, radio, lights, central heating, wall tiles, floor, all door locks etc etc. See Do Stone Smart Granite worktops at www.dostone.co.uk. Nasty bacteria on the cutting board will self clean as will the sink and recycle basket. No child in this kitchen will ever pull a boiling pot of rice upon herself. In-build safety / security will be a standard module in every smart kitchen. Energy efficiency also should save household fuel costs by 20% .There is little doubt that healthcare services are moving back to the community where it used to reside. Hospitals will be places for focused operations and all other healthcare issues will be dealt with from the home perspective. Most elderly people prefer independence and deserve dignity. But it is not always possible for relatives and friends to pop in daily to insure all is well. Imagine if your elderly Grandparents lived hundreds of miles away?Healthcare absorbs a lot of taxpayers money. Globally around 14% GDP!Technical writing is not regardless of what you may think, an easy job. After all, they will be able to do in days, what you tear your hair our attempting to accomplish in weeks if not months.Being Patronising - Although technical documentation should be clear, it should never be patronising. You are not creating documents to be read by morons but consumers and clients. You should always write to the skills level of your audience, but no matter what technical level people are on, they are not morons. Even children get offended when patronised, don't make that mistake with someone who is paying your salary, child or otherwise. As the old clich goes, everyone's a critic. This is particularly true of most sane people's reaction when faced with technical writing. As was highlighted in the example of the video recorder above, technical writing can be impenetrable to the end user. If this is the case, it is because whoever wrote the documentation, didn't bother to identify their audience and write to their level. It seems an obvious point to make, but one that is often overlooked, that the user of the documents your are creating, may not actually be an expert. Obviously if you are creating a document on a particular specialist product for a particular advanced user group (a good example could be auditing software for computer system administrators) then you will need to compose this is an entirely different way than if you are creating for example, a technical manual for mass market computer software aimed at the inexperienced home user. One of the first tasks you must accomplish before you even put pen to paper, of finger to keyboard, is to identify who the user of your documents will be and construct documents aimed at that particular target group(s). If you get this stage correct, it should avoid your documents being thrown across rooms in annoyance!Could you afford to replace all of these things? Conclusion / Shameless self promotionBefore diving headfirst into creating the documentation, draft out each section first. This will allow to reorder if the documents being created do not have a logical 'flow' without seriously having impact on the project. Many technical documents (especially for more detailed products) are made up of numerous (and in some cases practically countless) iterations. This is because the product shifts and changes over time, and one of the principal duties of a technical author is to keep abreast of these changes, and to ensure that they are all well documented. Good technical authors will always push their documents through as many drafts as humanly possible, refining on each draft, until they reach a position whereby they (and their employer) is satisfied that the documentation is timely, accurate and a true reflection of the product or process it documents. However, we may need to rethink the way we teach our engineering, medical, in fact all students. Ten years ago it was sufficient to teach a civil engineering student about programming in addition to their core subjects. But now with massive technological change and real world awareness how do we insure our professionals are up to speed in the multiplicity of knowledge required to make strategic policy decisions. The British Nuclear Group is deploying Ubisense sensor solution to map and identify radiation levels and the location of each worker to increase employee safety and efficiency.Choose the right tool for the jobSmart packaging can indicate if the correct drug is taken at the correct hour and help people to better manage their medication. No one will believe in ten years time that mobile phones were used for voice only. In Sweden, Norway and Denmark RFID mobile phone are becoming an essential tool for the automatic capture of critical medical data in the community. Thus an internal sensor implant could forward key data via your mobile to your doctor. However, improved national security safeguards are essential. The cost of rental insurance is based on several factors:We are at the dawn of integrating convergent technologies, and if we get it right we can offer future global cities some great solutions. Emerging environmental problems may be solved by emerging technologies. Lets just do it!Let a Draft inIf a fire should destroy or damage your home, your landlords insurance will cover the structure. It wont cover damage or loss of your belongings. Neither will it provide for the cost of temporary housing for you and your family. What is Technical Writing?Another thing to keep in mind is that jewelry, valuable collections, and guns are usually covered under a separate policy or rider. If you own these kinds of items, be sure to tell your insurance agent. You dont want to find out after disaster strikes that they arent covered or that they arent covered for their true value. Are you beginning to see why rental insurance may be a very wise investment? One way you can reduce the cost of your rental insurance is to check with whichever company insures your car. If they provide rental insurance you may be eligible for a multi-line discount. Whether you choose to be reimbursed for Actual Cash Value or Replacement Costs (more about that in a minute)Overuse of humour - People do not read technical documents to be entertained, they read them in the hopes of successfully completing a process, or extracting information. Unless it is relevant to the end user, avoid humour wherever possible. If you are writing a book, fine and good. If you are writing a manual, avoid humour like the plague, as more often than not users will miss the joke and just end up loathing the patronising idiot that wrote the documentation.Who in your organisation / company or home are responsible for looking into the horizon to anticipate the changes and innovations coming fast forward? To be able to exploit technology we must be open to the idea of new technologies, new business processes, changing the way we work, think, and live. People always come first and our perspective will determine how future technology will be adopted. Thus a big RFID / emerging technology debate needs to happen to insure we dont waste this opportunity before us. I am working with Two Four Productions to bring this debate to our TV screens, so if anyone wants to get involved please do contact me.Communicate - that's what you are paid to do!

We are at the dawn of integrating convergent technologies, and if we get it right we can offer future global cities some great solutions. Emerging environmental problems may be solved by emerging technologies. Lets just do it!

Do You Need Rental Insurance?

Many renters dont stop to think about what happens if there is a fire, someone breaks in and steals their new TV or stereo, or a visitor slips and falls on their property. The sad truth is; you will be responsible! While your landlord has insurance that covers the actual building, that coverage does not include your personal property or liability for injuries which occur in the space you rent ~ be it an apartment or a house and yard.

Because of the need to identify vital equipment quickly, the Military were naturally interested in technology that could help take the guesswork out of inventory and logistics. Wars fought in foreign lands create massive logistic problems; soldiers need bullets, food, etc when necessary, regardless of price or location. Battle readiness is key to military success.Know thy foeHowever, if you opt for Replacement Cost, youre paid whatever it costs to go out and buy a new TV with similar features. Insuring for replacement cost raises the amount of your premium so its a good idea to get quotes for both ACV and Replacement Cost policies. Then you can decide which option fits your needs and budget.Soon we will have free community-wide broadband. Sweden last month gave free broadband access to all their citizens, with speeds 100 times faster than that available to us in the UK. Recently Milton Keynes followed suit, and The City of London promised free business broadband to everyone within the Square Mile. This emerging infrastructure is important as we start to realise that Broadband is not just a tool for Internet access and free VOIP, but an essential infrastructure for real world awareness.RFID is an infrastructure technology, which will have a impact on almost every business process. However RFID is still a new technology, and thus we are waiting to see where it will lead in many applications. The case for RFID is well documented within specific business scenarios, but the benefit to the consumer are still little known apart from Londoners with their Oyster cards and Parisians with their Navigo cards. However, most people have used RFID without realisation it in their key-fobs, and one or two have found this facility so convenient that their home doors are locked the same way.Inconsistency - Even at the drafting stage, you should ensure that all the elements used in your document are consistent. This applies as much to the 'tone' of the document as to the layout of it. Ensure you use consistent senses (first person, etc.) as well as page layout, pagination elements, headers and footers, and all other textual elements. As already identified, technical writing is called that because it is technical in nature. Part of being technical is to be precise, and part of precision is to be as detailed as humanly possible. Even if the documents you are creating are for an advanced and technologically sophisticated user group, your documentation must focus on the details of a process, or in using a product. This can be a difficult feat to accomplish, but not if you write to your audience. Never assume that the reader knows anything about the product or process be documented, but in the case of advanced / expert users at least have the common sense to recognise the fact that they probably do not need to be told how to use the equipment they operate on a daily basis. When describing how to carry out a particular activity or task, identify each stage involved (number them if this fits the conventions of the document type you are creating) and to ensure the accuracy of what you have written test it yourself, or even better, rope in a volunteer of the same skills level as the end user.RFID sensors are playing a big part in airline safety. Airbus and Boeing have endorsed RFID wholeheartedly and mandated their supply chains to incorporate this technology into their product offering. If you ever glanced at the first aircraft cockpit you will see a couple of dials on the dashboard. Early pilots required the help of flight engineers, navigators and radio operator to fly. Pilots flew by the seat of their pants, using their skill and experience. Look now at the latest Airbus 300 series! Around 600 sensors all automatically working in harmony to insure engines and aircraft are all in good working order. Risk are constantly being reduced. Pilots alone would not be able to deal with all the complexity currently handled by wireless sensors and onboard computers. To be able to identify a foreign object like a bird caught in an aircraft engine following a successful flight can also save massive amounts of fuel. Again, to identify a minor fracture on a rotor blade prior to a major crack can prevent a nasty accident. After every flight a full log of the aircraft engine activity is downloaded to a preventive maintenance crews who search for irregularities. This data is key to safety and efficiency in the airline industry. The American FDA have endorsed the use of RFID for item level prescription use. Now Unit of Use medicine can be automatically matched to patient at POC( point of care). The ability to insure the correct drug is dispensed to the correct patient is key. US hospitals record 7000 deaths per year on average because of medication error. In addition, 750,000 adverse medical events happen each year causing massive suffering and anxiety to citizens and caregivers. Counterfeit drugs are a major concern for everyone. How can technology remove this menace?Technical writing unsurprisingly enough, refers to writing that is technical. Although this may seem like a fallacious definition, it's an important one to remember. Too many technical authors make the mistake of creating documentation that is either too technical, or too 'literary'. A good technical author should be able to adjust the balance between the two to suit the end user of the documentation. Technical writing is a lot like fresh air, pervasive and yet pretty much invisible. In the weird wired world in which we find ourselves, technical writing is everywhere. Software manuals, user guides for home appliances, instructional leaflets, emails, letters, reports, technical news reports, statistics and biographies on television sports shows all are examples of technical writing to which people are exposed to on a daily basis. If you have ever tried to program the time settings on a home video recorder and flung the manual across the room in disgust, you threw a piece of technical writing (although obviously not a very good one!). Too many times technical literature is produced by writers with not a large enough grasp of technology, or technologists that lack an ability to write. As a prospective technical author you must tread the very delicate line of being technically knowledgeable in your specialist field(s) as well as being a 'good' writer (as opposed to 'bad' writers who can usually be found mugging sweet old ladies or something). Technical documentation is usually produced for two distinct user groups, namely expert level users, and naive users. As a technical author one of your first tasks is to sort out what audience you are writing for, which brings me deftly to:Technology however is not separate to Society. No technology exists outside the influence of people, culture, policy, and economics. Everyone sees according to their personal environment, their education, their family values etc. Increased awareness of our cultural mindset is important. We could look at this as a prison mindset. A self-locking mindset makes us think a certain way and thus creates our thoughts and confirms our reality. It is a cosy place to be and change is not always invited in!When creating technical documents there are a number of fatal flaws you can make. Although by no means exhaustive, this section details some of the more common mistakes new authors make, in the hopes that you will avoid making them too:Common Mistakes to avoid makingWith sensors creating real world awareness, it is possible to have a traffic light system on your PC which will flag up the occasion when Mr X did not get up or make a cup of tea at 7am or any major break to the natural flow of activity in their daily lives. Any change in social interaction, for example, may indicate a change in well being, or impending illness reflected early by failure to eat. Lights automatically coming on when a elderly person visits the loo at night, for example, can help eradicate the thousand of hip operations required per year in the UK!A number of RFID applications together with innovations such as EPCGlobal and standardisations around wireless spectrums are actually enabling cyberspace to interface with the real world. Concepts such as the expression Internet of Things will mean that every object in our physical environment can be identified and its status confirmed in real time. Soon everything that you own including your household assets will be aware that you own it! Theft is going to be difficult!

Rental insurance may be worth the investment just for the peace of mind it offers you.

2007 Nissan Versa: Gen "Y", Take Notice

Automakers are clamoring to build and market cars to the Generation Y crowd which, loosely defined, and encompasses new drivers and mostly everyone who is under 30. Toyota threw the gauntlet down in 2003 when they introduced a line of cars under the Scion brand. Now, Nissan is responding and the Versa to be released during the summer of 2006 is their answer. Will the Versa compete successfully or be lost in a sea of Gen Y vehicles soon to flood the market? All of that is too early to determine, so lets take a look at the Versa and what the car has to offer to motorists.

A visit to Nissans website reveals much about the Versa. Unlike a certain Scion vehicle that takes its styling cues from a toaster, the Versa is aerodynamic and reminds me of the Toyota Matrix. Available as a four door sedan or five door hatchback, the Versa is expected to retail for around $12,000, the same price range as Scion vehicles. Like Scion, the Versa will be fairly well equipped to give motorists a value packed experience without having to add on several thousands more to the base sticker price in order to achieve a satisfactory and comfortable driving experience.

Along with a 1.8L I4 engine, here is what you can expect to be included with base models:

AM/FM/CD audio system
Air Conditioning
Power side mirrors and automatic trunk release
6 speed manual transmission [4 speed automatic is optional]
Split folding 60/40 seat with the hatchback

Not a bad standard equipment list for the price. For $2,000 more, SL versions will come with aluminum alloy wheels, cruise control, power windows/doors/locks, remote keyless entry, a souped up sound system, and more.

The car will have a 102 inch wheel base which is long for a vehicle of its type. The result is more interior room, with four adults having ample knee and leg room to weather long trips.

Pictures of the interior reveal a car that is well though out and not cheap looking. I especially like the dashboard with its overlapping circular instrument panel and easy to reach audio and air conditioning controls. A generation ago, entry level cars would have looked and felt cheap. Todays drivers expect more and the Versa delivers in the form of a decent level of standard equipment and attention to style.

The Versa replaces the Sentra as the entry level Nissan. Nissan has restyled the Sentra and promoted it up a notch much like Honda has done with the Civic and Toyota with the Corolla.

Although more expensive than Chevys Aveo and Kias Rio, the car has more flair and style than either one. Still, one has to wonder how the Versa will compete against Toyotas soon to be released Yaris and the all new Honda Fit. Throw in new models expected from Dodge and Ford and add Chinese cars to the mix and the whole entry level market becomes saturated.

Ultimately, the Versa is a step in the right direction and a nice alternative to some of its boxy competitors. Gen Y drivers have another choice in the Versa and an alternative to Scion, Toyotas youth-oriented brand.

Easy, Frugal Breakfasts!

We all know breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And that children that eat breakfast do better in school than those who don't.

The blender is a useful Techno-Witch tool for both gathering and banishing energy. The idea of a blender is to mix and mingle different elements so you can take various ingredients (refer to the Magic in Food article on this site) to create love potions using different ingredients. For instance blending strawberries, which is a love food, with vanilla ice cream (also love) with a touch of cinnamon (speed) could bring you a quick romance. Bring money to you by pulverizing spinach (money bringing) with cream (represents the smoothing of your path) to make a prosperity soup. If you are angry, you can also use the blender to pulverize elements as described above. A lot of the effectiveness of magick relies on your intent and your ability to visualize the outcome. In the old days, witches used mortar and pestles to grind magical elements and release their essence into the aura. These days you can use a blender, chopper or even a coffee grinder. However, we also all know that it isn't always easy to find time to prepare that all-important meal or to convince our children to eat it!
  • or peanut butter spread on whole-wheat toast.
  • how about a fruit smoothie? Toss whatever fruit you have in the blender with milk.
  • when you have a little time, prepare a large batch of pancakes or waffles. Freeze in a single layer, then stack in a zip-top bag. In the mornings, pop one into the toaster, then top with fruit and yogurt.
  • for a quick and easy breakfast try a toasted bagel spread with low-fat cream cheese.
  • or spread peanut butter and jelly between 2 pancakes. One way to create a positive attitude toward breakfast in your children is by showing them that you enjoy breakfast!Eating breakfast as a family is a great opportunity to spend some quality time together. Spending time together, making breakfast can turn out to be a child's favorite part of the day!The toaster is also a Techno-Witch's best friend. With a knife lightly carve a symbol representing what you would like to happen into a slice of bread or a frozen waffle -- a heart for love or the amount of money you need to receive The toasting represents the cosmos "warming up to the idea". All cooking practices are a form of magic. When the waffle or toast is ready, slather it with butter, to smooth your way and honey to make sure your wishes "stick" to you. Jam, particularly strawberry-rhubarb, is good for a love wish. Then eat it to symbolize bringing the magic into your life.Next article I will tell you how to be a Techno Witch using functions on your computer. You can also use your television set or radio to practice the ancient art of bibliomancy and scrying. Only instead of using a book, you are using sounds I guess I would call this Tvomancy or Radiomancy. Basically you ask a question and then randomly flip the radio and listen to what dialogue comes out first. You can do this too, using the television remote ask the question and the first image or dialogue that comes to mind contains your answer. This is a form of Techno-Fortune Telling.

Breakfast doesn't have to be ham and eggs anymore! Nor does it have to be cold cereal. By using a little creativity you can have a healthy breakfast every morning!
